THE UNREVEALED WORLD

by Kailani Farkas

The earth is overpopulated, an immense number of people alive, alive but not living. Screens are everywhere, a deadly modern atmosphere reaches me as everyone encloses themselves in their own selfish state of mind, where face to face interaction is nowhere to be seen. A stressed grown man lifts his head up from a screen and I look deep into his soul through his tired eyes and I can perceive his depression and agony. Self-depriving the wonders of life. He reaches his pocket and takes out a box and hands it to me, I open it and inside rests one of those rectangular container shaped artifacts called phones. I turn it on and it becomes the devil, it sucks in my identity and my life. I forget how to live, as the phone does it for myself. Deception fills my soul, a life has come to an end.

God lifts the lid, and a yellow light blinds me. Gazing around, this light reaches and lays hold of me, I look below and see an abandoned planet in a container. A new lease on life came to view. God opens another box and gently puts me down inside the new package.

Clear skies, rippling leaves, chirping birds, closed eyes, nature. I walk around the earth, my feet on the warm sand. I observe the shiny shells that have been washed into the shore covering the beach. The serrated mountains surrounding the world, rising above like nature’s protective walls. The grass dancing in unison with the wind. What else can I ask for? I know what, I would ask for more of this, more time. A butterfly gets close to me, she swims in the air, flutters its wings close and I watch her pass.

As I reach the last pages of my book, I notice how a metamorphosis covers the sky. It seems significantly close, almost tangible.

I wake up to the sound of the doorbell. I put on my robe, and head to the door, sleepily I open the front door and ahead of me lies a box. I wonder what kind of world is inside.
